Technics SP-10MK3 Direct Drive Turntable System from Japan
NOS (New Old Stock): An unused, extremely rare unit from Technics’ high-end series.
This model is often referred to as the holy grail of turntables. The total weight is 30 kg, including packaging and accessories.
This is a Japanese model with a voltage of 100V AC. Included is a separate AC 230V to AC 100V converter with a digital display and a power rating of 100W, which is sufficient to reliably power the Technics SP-10MK3.
Technics SP-10MK3
In 1981, Technics took the next step in designing the perfect turntable and introduced the SP-10MK3. To this day, this turntable system remains one of the best in its class and is globally praised.
The turntable platter consists of a copper alloy inner section and an aluminum outer section, weighing 10 kg. The turntable itself weighs 18 kg. The SP-10MK3 features a separate control unit with complex electronic circuits, ensuring precise control over the speed and rotational consistency of the heavy platter.
The system has a starting torque of 16 kg·cm², nearly three times the value of the SP-10MK2.
Variable Speed
The advantage of the MK3 is not just the almost immeasurable wow and flutter, but also the ability to adjust all speeds in 0.1% increments, up to +/- 9%. This makes the device ideal for transferring all types of records, including all kinds of shellac records. The SP-10MK3 comes with a softer turntable mat compared to the harder mat used on the SP-10MK2.
Open Motor
The newer generation of Technics turntables, introduced in the late 1970s and early 1980s, no longer features a closed motor compartment. The stator with green coils (core) is now attached to the base/chassis. The spindle bearing is fixed in the center. The support disc on top of the spindle is relatively small. This "simpler" construction method was applied in the design of the Technics SP-10MK3.
Heavy Turntable Platter
The platter of the SP-10MK3 consists of an aluminum base with a copper platter on top, and weighs an impressive 10 kg. The aluminum platter is directly connected to the spindle, while the copper top platter is secured with four screws to the aluminum platter. Before lifting the platter, the small centering disk must be removed using special tools. The special tools, brackets, centering disk, screws, and rivets for mounting onto a housing are all included.
