A distinctive tonearm from the Technics Reference Class

At first glance, the tonearm of the Technics SL-1000R will be familiar to users of the SL-1200 series, but it has been further developed in several important areas. With this Reference Class model, Technics has placed particular emphasis on bearing precision, mechanical stability and the control of unwanted resonances.

The S-shaped tonearm measures 10 inches (254 mm) in length, with a pivot-to-spindle distance of 239 mm. This makes it longer than the 9-inch tonearms used in the SL-1200 models.

Magnesium Tonearm Construction and Precision Bearings

The tonearm features a lightweight magnesium arm tube. Magnesium combines low weight with favourable damping properties, contributing to the mechanical characteristics required for accurate tracking of the record groove.

The tonearm uses a statically balanced design with a high-quality gimbal bearing mechanism. According to the published technical description, the bearings are manufactured to tighter tolerances than those found in Technics' more affordable tonearms. The bearing assembly is hand-assembled.

The combination of the longer arm geometry, magnesium arm tube and precision bearings is designed to ensure controlled movement of the stylus through the record groove.

Flexible Adjustment for High-End Cartridges

The Technics SL-1000R tonearm offers extensive adjustment options to accommodate different cartridges and headshells.

The tonearm height can be adjusted over a range of 15 mm. This allows the VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) to be adjusted to suit the cartridge and headshell combination being used.

In addition to the standard counterweight, supplementary screw-on weights are available to balance different cartridge and headshell combinations.

Phono Connection

At the rear of the chassis, a gold-plated five-pin DIN socket is provided for the phono cable. This offers a clean, standardised connection to the rest of the phono system.
