Where Motor Vibrations Matter
In a direct-drive turntable, the platter is directly connected to the motor. Even the smallest vibrations from the motor can travel through the mechanical system:

motor → bearing → platter → record → cartridge

Although these vibrations are tiny, the cartridge can still pick them up while tracing the groove. This may cause subtle effects in the sound, such as slightly less stable instrument placement, a slightly noisier background, or minor blurring of fine details.

High-end turntables must not only maintain constant speed but also minimize all mechanical and electrical vibrations in the drive system.

ΔΣ-Drive: Refined Motor Control
To reduce micro-vibrations even further, Technics developed ΔΣ-Drive (Delta-Sigma Drive) for the SL-1500CS. This digital motor control uses Delta-Sigma signal processing, a method also used in Technics’ digital audio systems.

Conventional motor control relies on PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), applying voltage in pulses of varying width. While effective, this method has limited resolution for very fine speed corrections, which can create tiny rounding errors and micro-vibrations.

ΔΣ-Drive calculates the motor signal at much higher resolution, creating smoother PWM pulses. Small speed corrections occur more evenly, producing a smoother and more stable motor rotation.

Combined with the coreless direct-drive motor, which is already nearly free of cogging, this results in an exceptionally steady and vibration-free rotation.
