General

Keep your Technics SL-1200 & SL-1210 series turntable in top condition with professional maintenance.
The Technics SL-1200 & SL-1210 are renowned for their legendary durability, but even these highly reliable turntables benefit greatly from a complete service.

The MK5 pitch fader is constructed as a variable resistor with carbon tracks over which a sliding contact moves. Due to intensive use and changing atmospheric conditions (cold, humidity, heat), these carbon tracks and contacts can corrode and wear over time.

This may result in:

• Drift of the 0-position

• Unstable pitch speed

• Unintended platter triggering

• Problems during (re)calibration

The pitch fader is therefore a wear-sensitive component, and timely replacement is highly recommended.

In addition, we regularly encounter contamination and sluggish movement of the main bearing shaft, often caused by the use of incorrect lubricants such as sewing machine oil.
And not to forget the target light: the original incandescent bulb is guaranteed to fail eventually. With this service, that problem becomes a thing of the past.

Service Pack I Contents – Overhaul & Revision Work

• Pitch Fader & LED Revision

The PCB (printed circuit board) containing the pitch fader, trimmers, and green LED is completely disassembled.

• Old pitch fader and LED are carefully desoldered and replaced with new components

• Removal of old solder residues and flux

• Thorough cleaning of the PCB for an optimal working base

• Professional soldering of the new MK5 pitch fader and LED

• Application of a new protective coating

• Trimmer / potentiometer upgrade (see trimmer upgrade section)

• New Pitch Fader Dust Cover

The internal dust cover prevents dust and debris from entering the pitch fader.

• Removal of the old dust cover

• Cleaning of adhesive residues and contact surfaces

• Installation of a new dust cover

• Main Bearing Revision

For this revision, the main PCB with electronics is lifted to allow removal of the bearing shaft.

• Complete disassembly of the bearing shaft

• Removal of contamination and old lubricants

• Polishing of the bearing shaft

• Inspection of brass bearing sleeve and housing (known issue: separation)

• Repair if required

• Lubrication with original Technics oil

• Reassembly and reinstallation into the turntable

• As a final step, 3 drops of Technics oil are applied into the bearing shaft well.

• Your SL is now ready for approximately 2000 hours of trouble-free operation.

• Calibration According to Technics Factory Specifications

Precise adjustment as specified by Technics at the factory.

• Adjustment of 3 trimmers:

  • 2 on the main PCB

  • 1 on the pitch fader PCB

Calibration of:

• Frequency

• Pitch fader (resistance value)

• Brake speed

Why upgrade?
The original factory-installed Technics trimmers are functional but of limited quality. Environmental influences such as heat, cold, and humidity can cause value fluctuations, resulting in:

• Unstable pitch

• Less precise platter control

We replace these with high-quality Bourns trimmers:

• Desoldering and removal of the original trimmers

• Cleaning of solder pads

• Installation of new premium-quality trimmers

• Complete recalibration of frequency, pitch fader, and brake speed

Result: an exceptionally stable and tightly performing SL.
