What is a Phono Preamplifier?

Why Do You Need a Phono Preamplifier?

When using a turntable, the signal coming from the needle is too weak to be sent directly to your amplifier. • MC (Moving Coil) Cartridges: These have a lower output signal and require a phono preamplifier with higher gain. MC cartridges are often more expensive and offer a more detailed and refined sound, but you will need a special phono preamplifier to optimally amplify them.

How to Connect a Phono Preamplifier?

If your amplifier does not have a built-in phono input, you will need an external phono preamplifier. The connection works as follows:

• Turntable to Phono Preamplifier: Connect your turntable to the phono input of the preamplifier.

• Phono Preamplifier to Amplifier: Then connect the output of the phono preamplifier to an AUX or Line input of your amplifier.
